This recognition, presented by the Abyssinia Industry Award Organization based in Addis Ababa, is a monumental honor, celebrating the hard work, dedication, and impact of our team in Ethiopia.

Why This Award Matters
The Abyssinia Award is one of the highest honors an organization in Ethiopia can receive, awarded by the Abyssinia Industry Award Organization, a well-respected entity known for its rigorous evaluation standards. The award is not just a reflection of our success but also a recognition of the exceptional quality and standards we uphold in our operations. HopeChest Ethiopia was honored on July 21 for earning this award, with a formal celebration held on August 5 to mark this achievement.
The Abyssinia Award is not just about outperforming other NGOs; it is about being recognized for meeting and exceeding a high bar of excellence. HopeChest Ethiopia was one of only three NGOs to receive this award for 2023/2024. The meticulous scanning process by the Abyssinia Industry Award Organization affirmed that we are not just delivering services but doing so with unparalleled quality and impact.
The Evaluation Process
The path to winning this award was thorough and demanding. The evaluation process for the Abyssinia Award involves a point-based system that assesses organizations against 49 stringent criteria, including structure, communication, and overall impact. A team of 700 evaluators, comprised of experts from various fields and universities, meticulously reviewed our submissions, including documents, reports, and manuals.
Our Country Director for Ethiopia, Milkias Taye, played a pivotal role during this process. After our documents were evaluated, he presented our case to the board members and responded to their questions, showcasing the depth of our commitment and the tangible results of our work.
In addition to the document review, a group of three evaluators visited our head office, spending half a day observing our operations, interviewing staff from HR, finance, and visiting CarePoints in the field. Their on-the-ground observations confirmed the effectiveness and integrity of our work.

The Journey to Success
The journey to this achievement has been one of collaboration, learning, and unwavering commitment. Our work in Ethiopia spans over 13 years, during which we have expanded our programs to reach over 30 communities across the country. Each of these communities is unique, with its own set of challenges and opportunities. By focusing on long-term relationships and locally-driven solutions, we have been able to adapt our programs to meet the specific needs of each community.
Key to our success has been our emphasis on holistic development. We believe that every child deserves not just to survive, but to thrive. This means addressing the full spectrum of a child’s needs—from physical well-being to emotional and spiritual growth. Our programs in Ethiopia include:
- Education: Providing access to quality education and supporting students with scholarships, school supplies, and extracurricular activities.
- Health Care: Offering medical care, nutritional support, and health education to improve the well-being of children and their families.
- Economic Empowerment: Equipping families with the skills and resources they need to achieve financial independence through vocational training, microloans, and savings groups.
- Community Development: Strengthening local communities through infrastructure projects, leadership training, and capacity building.

This award comes at a time when the needs in Ethiopia are greater than ever. The country has faced numerous challenges, including economic instability, devaluation of the currency, and fierce inflation. Yet, despite these difficulties, the resilience of the Ethiopian people remains strong. This award reaffirms our commitment to standing alongside our communities through every challenge, every triumph, and every new opportunity.
Honoring Our Ethiopian Staff
In addition to the formal award ceremony, our U.S. office felt it was important to recognize and celebrate the Ethiopian staff who made this achievement possible. To honor their dedication and hard work, we organized a special gathering where each team member was presented with an individual plaque from Children’s HopeChest U.S., acknowledging their invaluable contributions.
It was a heartfelt time of sharing, praying, and expressing our deep gratitude for their commitment to our mission. The team came together to honor one another, reflect on their collective accomplishments, and, of course, enjoy some celebratory cake. This moment of recognition was a powerful reminder of the unity and shared purpose that drives our work, both in Ethiopia and across the globe!
